Ridden by apprentice Alonso Quinonez, Masterpiece covered 1 1-16 miles on the turf course in 1:40.43 and paid $30.20, $11 and $5.
Secret Gypsy didn’t want to get into the starting gate, but she ended up setting a track record Thursday at Saratoga Race Course in her first career start. The chestnut daughter of Sea of Secrets, owned by Richland Hills Stable and John Kuehl, finished the 5 1/2 furlongs under jockey Kent Desormeaux in 1:03.26.

Defending champion Lava Man and 12 other horses were entered Wednesday in the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar this weekend. If all 13 start Saturday’s 1-mile race, it would be the second-largest field in the event’s 17-year history. Fourteen horses ran in 2002, when Carry Home became the third 3-year-old to win.
More Happy, trained by Bob Baffert, went wire-to-wire Wednesday in winning the $150,000 Adirondack Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Getting a clean break under jockey Rafael Bejarano, the 2-year-old daughter of Vindication was clearly the best as she cruised home to win the 6 1/2 -furlong event by three-quarters of a length in 1:17.51.
