With just two races remaining before the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series “Chase for the Championship” gets under way, most of the talk has centered around drivers already locked in – or those on the bubble.
Forward Marcin Gortat signed with the Orlando Magic on Monday. The Magic acquired the 6-foot-11 Gortat from Phoenix on draft night in 2005 for cash. He was chosen in the second round with the 57th overall pick. Gortat has played summer league for the Magic the past three years, but then returned to Germany each time.
The Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks have signed Chris Kunitz to a four-year, $14.9 million contract extension, putting the left wing under contract through the 2011-12 season. Kunitz had 25 goals and 35 assists in 81 games last season and one goal and five assists in 13 playoff games, missing eight because of injuries.
The stadium lights dimmed while Kyle Boller’s throw was in mid-air. The pass was incomplete — just like the game. With more lightning on the way, officials decided enough was enough. Saturday night’s preseason game between the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins was halted with 11:38 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Redskins an abbreviated 13-7 win.
Tony Dungy wanted Saturday night’s preseason game to be a tuneup for the defending Super Bowl champions. Peyton Manning was thinking more about cleaning up. The Super Bowl MVP threw three first-half touchdowns and was nearly perfect as the Indianapolis Colts routed Detroit 37-10 for Indy’s second win in 13 preseason games.

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback was expected to formally enter his guilty plea to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge Monday. Then, it’s up to U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson to decide whether to accept it.
Ben Roethlisberger liked almost nothing about his one half of play. The 247 yards passing, the three consecutive scoring drives, the big shift in momentum didn’t impress him at all. Roethlisberger, effective for only one drive previously in this preseason, had a big half statistically even though he was disappointed by it and the Pittsburgh Steelers shook off numerous mistakes to defeat the…
David Wells played a lot of golf and surfed after the San Diego Padres cut him earlier this month. He thought his big league career was over. It turns Boomer may not be done after all. Wells pitched five effective innings in his Dodgers debut and Los Angeles beat the New York Mets 6-2 on Sunday night to salvage the finale of the three-game series.
Mike Nolan keeps a slip of paper in his pocket on game days so the San Francisco 49ers coach can make notes whenever something goes wrong. After 35 plays in the first quarter of the 49ers’ exhibition loss to the Chicago Bears on Saturday night, Nolan already had made 23 derogatory notes. “That’s a really bad first quarter,” Nolan said Sunday after the 49ers made their first cuts and began their…
Former first-round draft pick Chris Claiborne signed with Jacksonville on Sunday, giving the Jaguars some much-needed depth at linebacker after backup Tony Gilbert was lost for the season. The Jags also signed linebacker Kevis Coley and defensive tackle Joe Anoai. The team placed Gilbert on injured reserve, three days after he tore his biceps against Green Bay.
