The Comfort Zone: CareerBuilder Challenge

Unlike other tournaments that migrate or that are contested on a rotation of courses, the host sites throughout the history of the CareerBuilder Challenge don’t possess the same kind of unique identities as classic designs, so comfort crosses over no matter where the tournament is held. After all, while impeccably manicured and prepared for the PGA TOUR, La Quinta, California, is a destination for fun and relaxation. The climate draws retirees and snowbirds, most of whom are done grinding on every level. They want and get golf courses that are playable. “Retirement” rough is grown to just two inches on each of the three courses in play this week: the Stadium Course at PGA WEST, the Tournament Course at PGA WEST and La Quinta Country Club. If you find it as a 15-handicap, it might be frustrating, but if you’re a youthful touring professional with cutting-edge equipment and receptive greens that are guaranteed to yield well over 2,000 par breakers in just four days, almost any pin is a green light no matter the lie. These are reasons why even the most stringent of fantasy gamers are prone to give the usual qualifications on course history a pass for just one week. Accumulating scoring opportunities and converting them into red numbers is all that matters, and all three courses cooperate. This year’s trio of host tracks first lined up for last year’s field, but champion Jason Dufner mirrored the profile of 2014 winner Patrick Reed when La Quinta CC partnered with Palmer Private and Nicklaus Private for that edition. Bill Haas tackled the same set as Reed a year later, but took a very different path to his one-stroke victory. Only the Stadium Course is lasered for ShotLink, so strokes-gained data is not measured on the other two courses. To retain an apples-to-apples comparison year to year and for all 72 holes, the data in the winners table immediately below and the three identifiers for success are not reliant on ShotLink. All three courses are stock par 72s. The greatest value in all three tables below lies within the frequency with which so many of the notables in the field have appeared and found paydirt.
