Fantasy Insider: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans gives PGA TOUR Fantasy Golf presented by SERVPRO gamers the week off. So, this week’s FI is abbreviated save relevant staples. However, the One & Done will be active as usual. I’ll be digging into it on Wednesday as scheduled. Monday’s Power Rankings laid out numerous fantasy-related matters as it concerns the format, but it didn’t address how to deal with the final results if you’re in a full-season league including the tournament. Let’s tackle that here. The winning team at TPC Louisiana will split the totals for FedExCup points and earnings typically distributed to the first- and second-place finishers. This means that a team finishing alone in second place will share the points and earnings for third and fourth place. (You can extrapolate this throughout the entirety of the results.) However, some fantasy leagues assign value to actual finish and not how the PGA TOUR will measure the points and earnings. Unless you adjust, this would result in heavier weighting based on team finish. The resolution is easy. Consider reassigning overall finish individually and not by team. For example, if there’s a team the finishes alone in second place, both will appear as finishing T2, but my advice is to reassign them as T3 for your purposes to retain equal weighting in the long-term. Similarly, a team that finishes alone in 10th place will have been beaten by 18 golfers (on nine teams), so assign values of T19 to each. After all, they’ll be sharing FedExCup points and earnings appropriated to 19th and 20th place. Power Rankings Wild Card J.B. Holmes and Bubba Watson … It’s not quite a tale of misery loves company, but maybe this is exactly what each bomber needs. Holmes has slumped with no better than a solo 50th at the Masters in his last three starts, while Watson hasn’t turned in a top 25 in a full-field event since a T13 at the 2016 Barclays. He emerged from pool play at the Match Play a month ago but still hasn’t put four rounds together since changing the ball he uses. TPC Louisiana has been kind to both, too. Watson is a former winner (2011) with a total of four top 20s, but he hasn’t appeared since 2013. Holmes placed T13 (2012) and T11 (2014) in his last two trips. They know they can air it out on the tee around this joint, so expect nothing less. Notable WDs Rod Pampling and John Senden … Since winning the Shriners in the fall, Pampling has been quiet on U.S. soil but still slots 27th in the FedExCup standings. Senden is 182nd and hasn’t recorded a top 30 on the PGA TOUR since the PGA Championship nine months ago.
