NBC Sports special recounts PGA TOUR Season in lead up to FedExCup Playoffs

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The PGA TOUR announced a 30-minute special titled PGA TOUR 2017: Stories presented by Southern Company recounting the PGA TOUR Season and the drama of the FedExCup Playoffs that will air Sunday, September 10, at 2:30 p.m. EST on NBC. Produced by PGA TOUR Entertainment, PGA TOUR 2017: Stories presented by Southern Company will detail how stars have emerged during the PGA TOUR Season, from major champions to breakout players, as well as the drama of the FedExCup Playoffs through the first two events. Jordan Spieth sinking a dramatic bunker shot to win a playoff at the Travelers Championship, Justin Thomas’ four victories and Jon Rahm’s exuberant celebration on the 18th green at the Farmers Insurance Open are just some of the great stories from the 2016-17 PGA TOUR Season. Every made putt, long drive and victory celebration have driven players in their pursuit for the season-long prize, the FedExCup. PGA TOUR 2017: Stories presented by Southern Company will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the Playoffs, as the best in the game compete to win the ultimate prize. The FedExCup Playoffs began in New York at THE NORTHERN TRUST where the top 125 in the standings teed it up. Glen Oaks Club proved to be an instant classic first-time venue as World No. 1-ranked player Dustin Johnson defeated Jordan Spieth in a dramatic playoff. With the top 100 advancing at week’s end, the show will highlight the pressure-packed opening Playoff event. In the second event of the Playoffs, the drama continued in Massachusetts at TPC Boston with Justin Thomas outlasting Jordan Spieth to win the Dell Technologies Championship. The Dell Technologies Championship also showcases the battle to be one of the top 70 players to move on to the BMW Championship, the third Playoffs event. Additional PGA TOUR 2017: Stories presented by Southern Company features include: Stewart Cink Stewart Cink, the 2017 Payne Stewart Award Recipient, is playing in his ninth FedExCup Playoffs. Cink’s illustrious career will be chronicled along with the body of work that led to him becoming the latest recipient of the prestigious Payne Stewart Award. Youth Movement Players under the age of 30 claimed 26 victories during the PGA TOUR Season, including a record-setting eight straight from the FedEx St. Jude Classic to the Barbasol Championship. The special will examine the new wave of stars like Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka as pursue the FedExCup. Rory McIlroy Last season, Rory McIlroy claimed the TOUR Championship and became the FedExCup Champion in dramatic fashion. What many might not know is that after an eagle on the 16th hole during the final round of the TOUR Championship, McIlroy tossed his ball into the crowd where an unexpecting young fan caught the rare piece of memorabilia. McIlroy later sent a letter to the 8-year-old boy thanking him and encouraging him to do well and be his best in all aspects of life. The show will take a behind-the-scenes look at the impact this made on the young boy. Xander Schauffele Xander Schauffele is no stranger to competition. His father, Stefan Schauffele, was an elite athlete in his home country of Germany before a car accident left him blind in one eye and unable to compete. We look in-depth at the Schauffele family’s story as Xander competes with a purpose to make his and his father’s dreams a reality on the PGA TOUR.
