Less than a month after saying he looked forward to clearing his name, Michael Vick now acknowledges the heinous acts associated with his name are true. The Atlanta Falcons quarterback said through a lawyer Monday that he will plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges, an admission that likely will mean prison time.
Bad Rex was back at his worst Monday night. Not that the Chicago Bears needed any reminders of what happens when Grossman goes awry — even in the preseason. After struggling for most of Grossman’s 26 plays, the Bears’ backups bailed him out and eventually overcame the miscues to beat the Indianapolis Colts 27-24 in what had been billed as a Super Bowl rematch.
Raul Ibanez is feeling great at the plate at the perfect time for the Seattle Mariners. Ibanez hit two of the team’s four home runs, and the Mariners began a challenging stretch with a 9-4 win over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Richie Sexson and Kenji Johjima also went deep for the Mariners, who have won four straight and seven of nine to improve to a season-high 18 games over .500.
A 24-hour virus made Mark Teixeira sick to his stomach. Those pitchers he homered off felt even worse. A sapped Teixeira hit a pair of homers for the second consecutive game Monday night, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 14-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds that showed what the power hitter can do on a nearly empty stomach.
Arizona Cardinals starting offensive tackle Oliver Ross will have surgery to repair a torn triceps tendon on Thursday. The Cardinals don’t know when Ross will return, and it’s possible he will miss the entire season. Levi Brown, the team’s top draft choice this year, has become the starter at right tackle.
Gerard Warren was dealt from Denver because he didn’t fit into the Broncos’ new defensive system. Warren Sapp doesn’t see how the former No. 3 overall pick fits onto the Oakland Raiders’ roster. “I wouldn’t want to go to a team three weeks after their training camp and try to make their team, with my talent,” Sapp said.
Daryl Johnston is one of the lucky ones. Despite breaking his neck opening holes for Emmitt Smith, he walks without a cane or a limp and is able to hold down a lucrative second career in broadcasting. Yet Johnston sympathizes with broken-down former players who need help with medical bills and aren’t getting it.
Tim Wakefield doesn’t worry about why he is successful indoors against Tampa Bay. The knuckleballer is just happy it continued Monday night. Wakefield continued his dominance over Tampa Bay, allowing four hits over seven innings as the Boston Red Sox blanked the Devil Rays 6-0 on Monday night. “The ball seems to move a little more inside,” Wakefield said.
Pedro Martinez allowed two unearned runs over five innings Monday in his most impressive outing since he began throwing after offseason shoulder surgery. With Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson and bullpen coach Guy Conti in attendance, the right-hander struck out four and walked one in a rehab start with Class-A St.
The New York Mets got Jeff Conine from the Cincinnati Reds for two minor leaguers on Monday, adding a 41-year-old player who has two World Series rings and knows how to contribute off the bench. Conine can play first base or outfield and is adept at pinch-hitting — he led the Reds with nine hits in that role.
Brady Quinn’s strong debut wasn’t enough for him to muscle into Cleveland’s quarterback competition yet. Quinn shined in his NFL introduction, leading the Browns on two long touchdown drives in the final 9:20 of a 23-20 loss to Detroit. The rookie threw a pair of scoring passes — against Lions backups — and played with composure and confidence in his first action as a pro.
Soon-to-be father and star quarterback Tom Brady knows he can’t make all the calls. He’d like a few days off to be at the birth of his first child — “I hope so,” he said Monday — but the Patriots’ schedule and coach Bill Belichick might get in his way. “Bill has a lot to say,” Brady said, “so we’ll deal with it when it happens.” New England plays the third of its four exhibition games — the one…
