PGA TOUR rookie Jon Rahm will be joined by a former college teammate on the PGA TOUR this week. Max Rottluff, who played with Rahm at Arizona State, was the medalist in this week’s Monday qualifier for the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. He shot 8-under 62 at El Camino Country Club in Oceanside, California, to earn his first start on the PGA TOUR. Like Rahm, Rottluff turned pro last June after an All-American collegiate career. The qualifier didn’t finish until Wednesday because of the heavy rains that hit Southern California. Rottluff won his third start on Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada last year and finished eighth on the Order of Merit to earn an exemption to the final stage of Q-School, where he finished T72 to earn conditional status on the Web.com Tour. Rottluff will celebrate his 24th birthday on Sunday. PGA TOUR member Steve Wheatcroft and San Diego State alum Todd Baek shot 63 on Monday. Baek, 25, has made one career start on the PGA TOUR, finishing T31 in the 2013 Valero Texas Open. He has competed on the Web.com Tour in each of the past two seasons, finishing 93 on last season’s money list. Wheatcroft, 38, finished 137th in last year’s FedExCup. He has five top-10s in 135 PGA TOUR starts, including T5 finishes at last season’s Barracuda Championship and RBC Canadian Open. He was a runner-up at the 2015 CareerBuilder Challenge. Tyler Aldridge, 32, earned the final spot in the Farmers Insurance Open after shooting 64 on Monday. He finished 140th in last season’s FedExCup. He had four top-25s last season, including a career-best T12 at the 2015 Sanderson Farms Championship.
