Jim Leyland doesn’t want the Detroit Tigers to stare at the standings. That’s probably a good idea because the slumping Tigers are slipping behind Cleveland in the AL Central and losing ground in the wild-card race. Pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton’s infield single off Joel Zumaya broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the 10th inning, and the Indians went on to beat Detroit 3-1 Thursday.
The judge who will determine how much time Michael Vick spends in prison has shown little mercy over the years for high-profile defendants. Nobody knows this better than defense lawyer Robert H. Smallenberg. In 2004, he represented a city official who stole more than $1 million from Richmond taxpayers.
Quarterback Jon Kitna’s status for the Detroit Lions’ third preseason game remained uncertain Thursday. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz said the Lions will wait until Saturday afternoon to decide whether the starter will play that night at Indianapolis. Kitna left Tuesday’s practice with back spasms and has not taken part in drills since.

Student Council shocked the field to win Sunday’s $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar.
Talk about a quick return on your investment. Barely a week after being purchased, Student Council made his first trip to the West Coast and stunned defending champion Lava Man to win the $1 million Pacific Classic by a half-length Sunday at Del Mar. Sent off as the even-money favorite, Lava Man faded to sixth in front of 35,320, the largest crowd since 2002 and third-largest in the race’s 17-year…
Jacques Villeneuve will try to become the latest Formula One driver to move into NASCAR, hoping to parlay a test session into a new career.
New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury defended Michael Vick, calling dogfighting a sport and comparing it to hunting. Marbury spoke Monday about the federal dogfighting conspiracy charges against Vick while promoting his basketball shoe in Albany, N.Y. “I think it’s tough,” Marbury said, according to Albany TV station Capital News 9.
Basketball always came easily to Eddie Griffin. It was life off the court that he had trouble handling. The former Minnesota Timberwolves forward died last week when his sport utility vehicle collided with a freight train in a fiery crash, the Harris County medical examiner’s office said Tuesday. Investigators used dental records to identify Griffin, 25, who began his pro career with the Houston…
Chad Billingsley threw strikes, got important outs and put his team in position to win. For change, it was enough. Billingsley struck out seven in seven sharp innings to earn his first victory in a month and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Thursday. Billingsley (8-4) allowed one run and four hits, winning for the first time since he beat Houston on July 23.
Now that his scoreless streak is over, Brandon Webb is setting his sights on something else: a second straight Cy Young Award. Webb’s string ended at 42 innings Wednesday night when he gave up a run in the first against Milwaukee. He went on to pitch the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-2 win.
The New York Jets have reached an agreement to trade disgruntled veteran Pete Kendall to the Washington Redskins, who hope the 34-year-old lineman will make up for the team’s inability to find a suitable starting left guard in the offseason. Pending a physical, the Jets will receive a fifth-round pick in 2008 or a fourth-rounder in 2009 for Kendall, an official within the NFL said Thursday.
