Byung-Hyun Kim’s latest stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks lasted only two starts. Arizona designated Kim for assignment Wednesday, a day after he retired only one batter in a 14-5 loss to the Florida Marlins. Manager Bob Melvin pulled Kim after 17 pitches. The right-hander allowed four runs, three earned, to boost his ERA in two starts with the Diamondbacks to 23.63.

Brewers 1B Fielder suspended 3 games
Prince Fielder was suspended for three games by the commissioner’s office Wednesday, leaving the Milwaukee Brewers without their top slugger in the middle of a pennant race. Fielder was suspended and fined an undisclosed amount for “inappropriate and aggressive conduct” during a confrontation with plate umpire Wally Bell on Sunday, when the Brewers lost 6-4 at Houston.

Hall of Famer Rizzuto dies at 89
To fellow Hall of Famers, Phil Rizzuto was a guy who could put down a squeeze bunt, handle a tricky hop or make a nifty hook slide. To a generation of fans who never saw “The Scooter” play a single inning, he became famous for something else — “Holy cow!” Part of the New York Yankees family for more than a half-century, Rizzuto died Monday night at 89.
Kouzmanoff, Maddux lift Pads by Rockies
When the San Diego Padres weren’t hitting the ball over the fences, they simply waited for ball four. Rookie Kevin Kouzmanoff homered and hit a two-run single during the six-run second inning, carrying Greg Maddux and the Padres to an 8-0 win over erratic Jeff Francis and the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.
Cards score 6 in 5th, rip Brewers 12-4
The St. Louis Cardinals were hurting the last time they were in Milwaukee. This time around, they’re climbing back into the pennant race. The Cardinals pounded out a season-high 19 hits in a 12-4 victory over the Brewers on Tuesday night, drawing the Cardinals closer to contention in the N.L. Central and spoiling the Brewers’ 1982 World Series team reunion.
Orioles pound somber Yankees 12-0
The New York Yankees are used to blowouts at home, just not this way. After observing a pregame moment of silence in memory of Hall of Fame shortstop Phil Rizzuto, the Yankees were taken out of the game early by Daniel Cabrera and the Baltimore Orioles’ bats. Cabrera pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, Aubrey Huff hit a grand slam and the Orioles cooled off New York with a 12-0 win…
Tigers beat Tribe, move atop AL Central
Sliding on his belly, Curtis Granderson’s only concern was showing the umpires that the ball had fallen into his outstretched glove before denting a blade of outfield grass. “I knew it was real close,” he said. Just like the AL Central. Granderson’s diving grab in the eighth inning kept it tied and Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer in Detroit’s four-run 10th as the Tigers moved one game ahead of…
Braves’ Cox breaks record for ejections
Talk about timing. If Bobby Cox was going to break a dubious record, he couldn’t have picked a better moment. Cox was tossed after the fifth inning Tuesday night, breaking John McGraw’s record for career ejections, but it fired up Atlanta and may have kept Chipper Jones around to drive home the winning run.
Willis ends skid, Marlins rout Arizona
Mired in the longest winless streak of his career, Dontrelle Willis was desperate for run support. So the Florida Marlins scored 14 times Tuesday night. Willis earned his first win since May 29, striking out 11 in seven innings and letting the Marlins’ bats do the rest in a 14-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Jays’ Halladay gets 5th CG, beats Angels
Roy Halladay didn’t give the Los Angeles Angels a chance to recover from some sloppy fielding. The right-hander pitched his major league-leading fifth complete game and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of four errors to beat the Angels 4-1 on Tuesday night. “There aren’t many people who can do as many things with the baseball that he can and marry it with the control,” Angels manager Mike…

His speed and spunk made him a Hall of Famer. “Holy cow!” made Phil Rizzuto famous. Popular as a player and beloved as a broadcaster, the New York Yankees shortstop during their dynasty years of the 1940s and 1950s died Monday night. “The Scooter” was 89. Rizzuto had pneumonia and died in his sleep at a nursing home in West Orange, N.J., daughter Patricia Rizzuto said Tuesday.
