Craig Monroe quickly found himself back in a pennant race Thursday when the Detroit Tigers traded the slumping outfielder and cash to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named. Despite hitting only .222 before Detroit designated him for assignment last Friday, Monroe was productive against left-handed pitching.

Tribe top Tigers, go up 2 1-2 in Central
Jim Leyland doesn’t want the Detroit Tigers to stare at the standings. That’s probably a good idea because the slumping Tigers are slipping behind Cleveland in the AL Central and losing ground in the wild-card race. Pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton’s infield single off Joel Zumaya broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the 10th inning, and the Indians went on to beat Detroit 3-1 Thursday.
Billingsley pitches Dodgers past Phils
Chad Billingsley threw strikes, got important outs and put his team in position to win. For change, it was enough. Billingsley struck out seven in seven sharp innings to earn his first victory in a month and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2 Thursday. Billingsley (8-4) allowed one run and four hits, winning for the first time since he beat Houston on July 23.
Braves SS Renteria returns to 15-day DL
Atlanta Braves shortstop Edgar Renteria was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, one day after he was activated. He reinjured his right ankle while checking his swing on the first pitch he saw Wednesday against Cincinnati. Renteria aggravated the sprain that forced him to miss 17 games since Aug.

Streak over, Webb bids for 2nd Cy Young
Now that his scoreless streak is over, Brandon Webb is setting his sights on something else: a second straight Cy Young Award. Webb’s string ended at 42 innings Wednesday night when he gave up a run in the first against Milwaukee. He went on to pitch the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-2 win.
Rays beat BoSox’s Matsuzaka for 3rd time
B.J. Upton made the most of a rare mistake from Dice-K. Upton hit a two-run homer and Tampa Bay beat Daisuke Matsuzaka for the third time this season, as the Devil Rays edged the AL East-leading Boston Red Sox 2-1 on Wednesday night. “A lot of his pitches look the same,” said Upton, who had struck out four times and was hitless in seven previous at-bats against the Japanese right-hander.
Padres lose Young, but Peavy beats Mets
Jake Peavy stepped off the mound and escaped to his own little island. While the crowd got revved up, he tried to settle down and envision a perfect sequence of pitches. Pretty neatly done. Prone to becoming overly excited, Peavy escaped an early bases-loaded jam and went on to lead the San Diego Padres to what he called a “must win,” beating the New York Mets 7-5 Wednesday night.
Trembley to return as O’s manager in ’08
Before committing to making Dave Trembley the manager of the Baltimore Orioles in 2008, Andy MacPhail wanted to see how the team reacted to failure. MacPhail, the club’s president of baseball operations, never got much of a chance. After the Orioles bounced back from three straight losses to Seattle this month to win two of three against both Boston and New York, the two best teams in the AL East,…
Twins score 7 in 1st, end M’s win streak
The rare chance to relax came early for Carlos Silva and the Twins. Minutes into Wednesday’s matinee against Seattle, their ragged offense broke loose for a seven-run first inning fueled by Michael Cuddyer’s grand slam. “I’m going to sound like a broken record again,” Cuddyer said, smiling. “Hopefully, we can sustain this, and hopefully we can carry it into the next series and be able to put some…
Pettitte helps Yanks avoid sweep in LA
With a boost from Andy Pettitte, Joe Torre climbed another spot on the New York Yankees’ wins list. Pettitte won his fifth consecutive start and New York salvaged the finale of its three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels with an 8-2 victory Wednesday night. The win was Torre’s 1,150th as manager of the Yankees, giving him sole possession of second place on the franchise chart behind Joe…
