Monday Qualifiers: Genesis Open

Kevin Tway shot 65 on Monday at Industry Hills’ Eisenhower Course to earn medalist honors at the Monday qualifier for the Genesis Open. Tway, 28, finished one shot ahead of former UCLA All-American Jonathan Garrick. Garrick’s alma mater is just four miles from Riviera Country Club, site of the Genesis Open. Tway’s former Oklahoma State teammate, Kevin Dougherty, and PGA TOUR rookie J.T. Poston advanced out of a playoff for the final two spots in the field. They both shot 67 on Monday, as did Tag Ridings, Kenny Pigman, Brandon Hagy and Steve Alker. Tway, the son of former PGA Championship winner Bob Tway, is in his second season on the PGA TOUR. He’s made the cut in 6-of-9 starts this season and ranks 157th in the FedExCup. He finished 27th on last year’s Web.com Tour money list, then earned his TOUR card with a third-place finish at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship. That was the final event of the Web.com Tour season after Hurricane Matthew forced the cancellation of the Web.com Tour Championship. Tway also was a PGA TOUR member in 2013-14, finishing 177th in the FedExCup. Garrick, 22, made his PGA TOUR debut earlier this season at November’s OHL Classic at Mayakoba. He finished T69 after receiving a sponsor exemption into the field. Garrick competed on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada last year after graduating from UCLA with a degree in history. He finished 37th on the PGA TOUR Canada money list after posting two top 10s in nine starts. Poston, a PGA TOUR rookie out of Western Carolina, ranks 135th in the FedExCup. The 23-year-old has made 6-of-9 cuts this season. He finished 10th on the Web.com Tour’s Regular Season money list in 2016. Dougherty, 25, will be making his PGA TOUR debut. He shares a hometown (Murrieta, California) and alma mater (Oklahoma State) with Rickie Fowler. They’re both former California state high school champions, as well. Dougherty has conditional Web.com Tour status this season after making it to Q-School’s final stage, where he finished T113.
