Late spurt gives Efficient the Melbourne Cup

In this photo released by the Victorian Racing Club shows Efficient, right, crossing the finish line to win the Melbourne Cup in Melbourne Australia, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007. English stayer Purple Moon left, was second and Irish-trained Mahler third in the 3,200-meter race that had 21 starters. There were three late scratches in the 5 million Australian dollar (US$4.6 million, Euro3.2 million) race.

New Zealand-bred Efficient beat Purple Moon by three-quarters of a length Tuesday in the $4.6 million Melbourne Cup, Australia’s richest and most prestigious horse race. Irish-trained Mahler was third in the nearly two-mile race. Ridden by Michael Rodd, Efficient, a 4-year-old gelding, won for the sixth time in 13 starts.
