Twins GM Ryan to resign, become adviser

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan announces his resignation during a news conference Thursday, Sept 13, 2007, at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The GM the past 13 years, Ryan said his resignation was effective Sept. 30. He will be replaced by Bill Smith. Ryan will assume a role as senior advisor to Smith.

Terry Ryan became one of baseball’s most revered general managers this decade by doing more with less. He didn’t wear a uniform, but he was a major player in Minnesota’s recent success. The demands of the job began to bother him, though, and Ryan became ready for a different role.
