Uggla leaves Marlins for birth of child

Florida Marlins' Dan Uggla rounds the bases after hitting a solo home run off Arizona Diamondbacks' Micah Owings in a baseball game in Miami, Tuesday, May 20, 2008. The Marlins won 3-2. After a breakout rookie season with the Marlins, Uggla wasn't feeling great about the way he started this year. Despite his slow start, Uggla sad he hasn't changed his batting technique, but has tried to prepare for pitches earlier. Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said he was pleased with the All-Star slugger's performance, but added it was an effort he'd like to see from every player on his roster.

Florida third baseman Dan Uggla was away from the team on Wednesday for the birth of his child. He returned to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., but was expected to be back with the team on Thursday for the final game of a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves. Uggla hit two home runs in Tuesday night’s 5-4 loss to the Braves, his third two-homer game of the season.
