Stroke caused Lute Olson to retire

In this March 16, 2007 file photo, Arizona coach Lute Olson directs his team against Purdue during the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional basketball tournament in New Orleans. Olson has retired after 24 years with Arizona. Athletic director Jim Livengood confirmed Olson's decision Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, after hours of news reports speculating about the 74-year-old Hall of Famer's future.

Lute Olson’s doctor said Tuesday that the former Arizona basketball coach had a stroke within the last year and he advised him to retire. The comments by Dr. Steven Knope at a news conference called by Olson’s family offer the first explanation for Olson’s sudden retirement last week, two days after he appeared at the Wildcats’ media day.
