Trainer Stutts makes Derby debut at 70 with Smooth Air

Bennie Stutts Jr. keeps a picture of his father over his bed in his Florida home. The photo, taken more than 50 years ago, shows Bennie Sr. in the winner’s circle at Santa Anita with a horse he trained named Unselfish. The story goes that Unselfish won three races in an 11-day span, increasing the margin of victory each time.
