Torvald Palema finished strongly on the final straightaway to win the Elitloppet trotting classic on Sunday. The 8-year-old stallion, with Swedish driver Ake Svanstedt, won the one-mile race by about half a length after trailing far back in the final curve. Lord Justice held off Santana Six in the stretch to score a half-length win in the $70,000 Spend a Buck Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday. Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Chris DeCarlo, it was the first stakes win for the 3-year-old colt, who covered the mile and 70 yards on the fast main track in 1:39 4/5 and paid $15.60, $8 and $4.20.

When there’s no Green Monster to aim at, the Boston Red Sox don’t seem to have the same offensive punch. Alex Rios had four hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, leading Brian Tallet and the Toronto Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the slumping Red Sox on Saturday. Marina Ballerina recovered from a rough start to win the $55,000 Cool Air Stakes on Saturday at Calder. Bereba took second and Rate of Exchange came in third in the seven horse field. Charlie Papa, who had won the Cool Air the last two years, was scratched after the race was switched from the grass to a sloppy main track.
