Bowman to join Blackhawks as adviser

Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman is joining the Chicago Blackhawks as a senior adviser for hockey operations. Bowman has won nine Stanley Cup championships as a coach. He’s to be introduced at news conference Thursday at the United Center. The 74-year-old Bowman has been a special consultant with the Detroit Red Wings, a team he coached to three Stanley Cup titles.

Illinois G Smith faces legal trouble

An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday, July 29, 2008, for Smith after prosecutors filed paperwork to revoke his probation for allegedly drinking alcohol. The 21-year-old Peoria man is serving two years of probation after pleading guilty last year to felony driving under the influence causing great bodily harm. He drove a car into a tree in February 2007, injuring former teammate Brian Carlwell.

Just a few months before junior guard Jamar Smith was expected to return to the basketball court for Illinois, a prosecutor said Tuesday she wants a judge to revoke his probation for allegedly drinking alcohol.
