Dutch racer Junior Strous earned his first career Atlantic Championship pole position Saturday, turning a lap at 106.251 mph at Circuit Mont-Tremblant in the No. 6 Condor Motorsports/Team Holland entry. Strous’ fast lap came during the first of two qualifying sessions for the Sunday race, just as the weather began to change.

Loretta lifts Astros past Red Sox 3-2

Mark Loretta has gone from All-Star to nemesis for the Boston Red Sox. Loretta had a pinch-hit, RBI single in the eighth inning off Hideki Okajima on Sunday to lift the Houston Astros to a 3-2 win over the Red Sox. An All-Star second baseman for Boston in 2006, Loretta signed with Houston as a free agent in January 2007.

No more National League foes remain on the schedule for Kevin Slowey and the Minnesota Twins to master, unless they’re able to reach the World Series. Half the season still remains, so Minnesota must prove for three more months its place as a legitimate playoff contender. If the Twins can capture the successful spirit of these last two weeks, though, they’ll be right there at the end.

Oliver Perez always manages to drive the New York Mets mad with his pattern — good start, bad start, something in-between. Except when he faces the New York Yankees. Perez pitched another gem against them Sunday, Carlos Delgado homered again and the Mets won this year’s Subway Series, beating the Yankees 3-1.

Arroyo, Dunn help Reds beat Indians 9-5

Bronson Arroyo pitched worse and somehow got much better results. The Cincinnati Reds’ right-hander bounced back from the worst start of his career and Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer in a 9-5 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Arroyo (5-7) struck out six and gave up two runs over six innings for the Reds, who took five of six from their interleague and intrastate rivals this season.
