There will be girl power in the 134th Kentucky Derby, with filly Eight Belles set to take on 19 boys Saturday. Trainer Larry Jones officially entered Eight Belles in the Derby on Wednesday, ending speculation that she might run in the Derby-eve Kentucky Oaks for fillies. “I’m willing to take a shot,” owner Rick Porter said.

Took Hanover, owner of the fastest local mile of the season, drew post position No. 6 and was the 5-2 favorite for Saturday night’s $390,000 final of the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series at Yonkers Raceway. Full field of 20 horses set for Kentucky Derby
Unbeaten Big Brown and the filly Eight Belles were among a full field of 20 horses entered for the Kentucky Derby. A total of 24 horses were placed into the entry box Wednesday morning, but only the top 20 horses based on graded stakes earnings made the field, including the first filly in nine years.

Ballymore Lady wins Churchill feature
Ballymore Lady took the lead in midstretch and won the $56,400 allowance feature by one length Tuesday at Churchill Downs. The 5-year-old mare, ridden by Julien Leparoux, covered the 1 1/16 miles on the turf in 1:47.37. Callie’s Joy led until Water Gap moved even at the head of the stretch, followed soon after by Ballymore Lady.

Safety investigation follows equestrian fall
American equestrian officials were preparing to impose new safety rules — including suspensions for certain dangerous jumps — after a weekend accident that killed a horse and critically injured its rider. Although the Olympic sport has taken steps in recent years to ramp up safety, 12 riders worldwide have been killed in the past two years.

Jones’ two fillies early choice for Kentucky Oaks
Trainer Larry Jones will likely have the favorite in Friday’s $500,000 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. Sunland Park racing director Dustin Dix figures the Southwest border has given plenty to horse racing — famed jockey Willie Shoemaker and trainer Bob Baffert, for starters. So, he figures, the track outside El Paso, Texas, deserves a graded rating for its featured race, the WinStar Derby, during the Kentucky Derby buildup each spring.
