O’Brien can return to college coaching

Jim O’Brien won an appeal Thursday and can return to the college sidelines after he had been fired by Ohio State and essentially banned from coaching by the NCAA for paying a recruit. The NCAA’s ruling on March 10, 2006, all but prevented any colleges from hiring O’Brien. Free-agent third baseman Pedro Feliz and the Philadelphia Phillies finalized an $8.5 million, two-year contract Thursday. With the option and performance bonuses, the contract could be worth up to $15 million over three years. “We said from the beginning of our offseason that we would try to improve the club in any way we could,” assistant general manager Ruben Amaro said in a statement.
