Ian Poulter said Thursday a British golf magazine took his words out of context when it quoted him as saying when he reached his potential he would be the only one capable of challenging Tiger Woods. The interview with Poulter, in the March edition of Golf World U.K., created a buzz at the Dubai Desert Classic, where Woods opened with a 7-under 65 to build a two-shot lead.

Davis Love III plans to play next week at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, his first tournament since he had surgery on his left ankle to repair torn tendons. “I’m eager to get back into competition and get this year started,” Love said Thursday. “I have some goals I want to achieve in 2008 and beyond, so I am excited to get back into the mix.” He has some catching up to do.

Peter Forsberg has decided not to play for his hometown team Modo this season, instead setting his sights on a return to the NHL. Forsberg made the announcement to Modo hours before the deadline for transfers in the Swedish hockey league. “My goal is to go back to the NHL,” Forsberg told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet.

The Nashville Predators signed forward Jordin Tootoo, the first Inuit to play in the NHL, to a two-year contract extension. General Manager David Poile announced the deal worth $1.95 million Thursday, after the team’s morning skate. Drafted in 2001, Tootoo has career-highs with seven goals and 13 points in 41 games this season.

Jim O’Brien won an appeal Thursday and can return to the college sidelines after he had been fired by Ohio State and essentially banned from coaching by the NCAA for paying a recruit. The NCAA’s ruling on March 10, 2006, all but prevented any colleges from hiring O’Brien. The governing body of college sports also said seven rules violations took place at Ohio State while he was coach.

Free agent outfielder Luis Gonzalez and the Florida Marlins have reached a preliminary agreement on a $2 million, one-year contract. Gonzalez must pass a physical for the deal to be finalized, a person familiar with the negotiations said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the deal.

Free-agent third baseman Pedro Feliz and the Philadelphia Phillies finalized an $8.5 million, two-year contract Thursday. With the option and performance bonuses, the contract could be worth up to $15 million over three years. “We said from the beginning of our offseason that we would try to improve the club in any way we could,” assistant general manager Ruben Amaro said in a statement.
