In a Nov. 29 story about a game between Oregon and Kansas State, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Oregon had never faced a ranked nonconference opponent on the road. Oregon played No. 18 Georgetown on the road last season.
Southern California has two impressive freshmen. Davon Jefferson, the lesser known of the pair, scored 23 points and O.J. Mayo, one of the highest profile recruits of recent years, took charge late in the game to lead the 22nd-ranked Trojans to a 66-55 victory over Oklahoma on Thursday night. Jefferson had nine rebounds and was a steadying presence for USC until Mayo began to light it up.
Colorado coach Jeff Bzdelik wanted a shirt like the Air Force fans were wearing, with his photo splashed on the front and a giant red “x” across the likeness. “But they told me I had to buy it,” Bzdelik said. Nothing comes free for former coaches. Bzdelik weathered the taunts and jeers and Richard Roby scored a season-high 21 points as Colorado escaped with a 60-50 victory over Air Force on Thursday…

Shan Foster scored 26 points to lead Vanderbilt to a 91-88 double-overtime victory over South Alabama on Thursday. The Commodores rallied from an eight-point deficit midway through the second half to force a first overtime. Vanderbilt had a chance to win, but Alan Metcalfe’s shot attempt was blocked by Ronald Douglas, forcing a second overtime.
The Saint Joseph’s crowd was rocking with good reason. The Hawks rallied all the way back from 17 points down to lead No. 19 Gonzaga by six with 4 minutes left. Rooting for the Hawks’ biggest win in four seasons, the front row of the raucous student section unfurled a banner of SJU’s famed slogan: “The Hawk Will Never Die!” The celebration was premature and so were any thoughts the Bulldogs were…

An’Juan Wilderness scored a career-high 21 points and Leemire Goldwire hit the clinching free throw with 1.5 seconds left to lead Charlotte past cold-shooting Wake Forest 63-59 on Thursday. Goldwire, held to 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting, hit the first free throw and intentionally missed the second as the 49ers (4-2), overcame 39 percent shooting with suffocating defense.
Police reports of an alleged shooting incident involving Bob Knight differ slightly from the account given by the Lubbock man who said the Texas Tech coach or his hunting buddy fired birdshot his way. James Simpson told The Associated Press that birdshot came into his yard three times on Oct. 21 and three times he yelled from a distance at Knight and the other man to move away from his home to hunt…

Ralph Beard left the University of Kentucky’s basketball program having won national championships in 1948 and ‘49 and with a reputation as one of the all-time greats on the hardwood. Beard’s promising professional basketball career only lasted two years, though, brought down in a point-shaving scandal that saw him and several of his former teammates barred from the NBA for life.
The second-ranked UCLA Bruins are mostly healthy and on a roll as they get ready to take on No. 8 Texas. With preseason All-America Darren Collison back from an injury and contributing 14 points and five assists in his season debut, UCLA (7-0) rolled to an 83-60 victory over George Washington on Wednesday night.
North Carolina didn’t need any help from apparitions. It just seemed that way to cold-shooting Ohio State. Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson led a second-half surge and the top-ranked Tar Heels held Ohio State without a field goal for almost 11 minutes in a 66-55 victory Wednesday night. The game turned when the Buckeyes missed 17 consecutive shots from the field, a span during which a 39-39 tie…
Catcher Brian Schneider and outfielder Ryan Church were traded to the New York Mets by the Washington Nationals on Friday for outfielder Lastings Milledge. In Schneider, the Mets add yet another catcher, following their trade for Johnny Estrada last week. In Milledge, the Nationals pick up a talented young player they hope can avoid the sorts of missteps that marked his Mets career and be a key…
The Tampa Bay Rays signed reliever Troy Percival to a two-year contract Friday, addressing a pressing need to improve one of the worst bullpens in the major leagues. The 38-year-old right-hander, who came out of retirement to go 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA in 34 appearances for St. Louis in 2007, will make $8 million during the next two seasons.
