Mike Montgomery, the winningest coach in Stanford men’s basketball history, will return to the school as an assistant to the athletic director. Patrick Marleau agreed to a two-year, $12.6 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks on Friday, keeping the longtime captain with the club through 2010. After months of negotiations and public speculation on Marleau’s future, he finalized a deal two weeks before training camp opens to stay with the club that drafted him in 1997.
UCLA will play Davidson in the 14th annual John R. Wooden Classic basketball doubleheader in December. The Dec. 8 game will be the first meeting between the teams since 1975, when UCLA won 91-64 at Pauley Pavilion in the season Wooden retired. Pitcher Steve Trachsel was traded from the Baltimore Orioles to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, giving the NL Central leaders another starter for the stretch. Orioles head of baseball operations Andy MacPhail made the deal — he was president of the Cubs from 1994-2006. Trachsel returned to the place where he started his major league career.

Divers resumed searching the Delaware River on Friday for the father of Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson. Floyd “Pete” Nelson was reported missing from his job at a tugboat repair shop about noon Thursday. The 57-year-old was last seen near the water and officials feared that he had fallen into the river just south of the Commodore Barry Bridge.
